Art Basel Miami Beach
Miami Beach, United States
Miami Beach · December · Subject to availability
Early December — dates to be confirmed
The Americas' principal art fair, and the week in which Miami becomes the centre of the Western hemisphere's cultural calendar.
The Miami Beach edition is the fair's American arm and has a character entirely its own. The commercial core is the same — some two hundred and eighty galleries, a first preview day on which the significant works are placed — but the surrounding week has expanded well beyond it. Satellite fairs run across the causeway and along the beach, the private collections in the Design District and Allapattah open their December exhibitions, and the city programmes several days of gatherings that have little to do with the fair and a great deal to do with who is present. The result is a week that serves two purposes: a serious market event for collectors of contemporary and Latin American work in particular, and the year's final gathering point for a network that runs between New York, São Paulo and the Gulf.

Why it matters
Miami is where the Latin American and North American markets meet, and the depth of contemporary and post-war material shown here is not reproduced elsewhere in the hemisphere. The private collections opening to the same week give the visit a curatorial dimension that a fair alone does not, and the concentration of collectors, advisers and institutional figures makes it the most efficient December week in the calendar for anyone building a collection.

Frequently asked
How does Miami differ from the Basel edition?
Miami is stronger in contemporary and Latin American material and carries a much larger surrounding social programme. Basel remains the more concentrated market event.
Are the private collections worth building into the week?
They are among the strongest reasons to attend. Several of the most significant private holdings in the Americas open dedicated exhibitions to coincide with the fair.
How early should accommodation be settled?
By late summer. Miami Beach is at capacity for the week and rates and availability both move sharply from September onwards.
What does Scott & Vale arrange?
