The Ryder Cup

September · Subject to availability

Biennial, late September — host venue and dates to be confirmed

Three days of match play between Europe and the United States, held every second year and alternating between the two continents.

The Ryder Cup is contested every second year between teams representing Europe and the United States, with the host continent alternating each cycle. Match play produces an atmosphere unlike any other event in golf: no prize money, partisan galleries, and a level of pressure that regularly undoes players who are untroubled by ordinary competition. The three days are structured as foursomes and fourballs before the Sunday singles, and the outcome is frequently unresolved until the final matches. Because the venue changes each cycle and is announced years in advance by the organisers, planning is a matter of committing early to a region rather than to a fixture. Accommodation within reach of any host course is taken well before the year begins.

Why it matters

It is the only occasion on which golf is played as a team sport at the highest level, and the atmosphere that produces has no equivalent in the game. The biennial rhythm and the rotating host continent make it an event that principals plan around years ahead rather than annually, and the surrounding hospitality is the largest of any golf occasion.

How access is arranged
